ICT/Computing
Aims and Philosophy
To ensure that the quality of teaching and learning is of the highest. Learning is active whenever it is appropriate and the subject content includes basic programming as well as leading edge digital development. There is an environment of trust and goodwill and pupil's have the opportunity to share their ideas openly. Creativity is encouraged. We expect pupil's to apply themselves and we teach in a way that allows each of them to achieve the best possible results. The teaching and learning process is both enriching and rewarding. We believe that in addition to understanding how to use generic application software properly that pupils should also be taught how to write useful computer programs using industry standard software. Our link with IBM in the UK is an important one and one of IBM's Master Inventors supports the IT and Computing Department at Aiglon.
Curriculum by year-group
IT is taught to BPF1, BPF2 and Forms 1-3 inclusive. The IGCSE is taught over 3 periods a week in the Senior School. Pupils in BPF1 and BPF2 learn how to Touch-type and also: Acceptable use, email and calendars, word processing, presentations, spreadsheet modelling, graphing, databases and simple control.
The 2nd Form has two lessons of Computing & IT a week and this enables them to complete some innovative computing. Simple web based programming is taught and pupils enter into a competition to see who can create the best program or piece of educational software.
Computing & IT task sheets and mini-projects are completed by all pupils in the 3rd Form. These tasks are completed within different subject areas. They have been prepared by the ICT Department in liaison with members of other departments. The skills that pupils will acquire will be similar to those that are required for the International Computer Driving Licence.
IGCSE
This is an excellent course and it follows the set syllabus of The Cambridge University International Examinations Board with practical examinations counting for 60%
Touch Typing
There are many opportunities for boys and girls at Aiglon College to develop their IT skills. Junior and Senior versions of excellent touch-typing software are available on the network for any pupil to work on at his or her discretion.
Programming Club
A group of keen programmers meet once a week to design and create computer games using Greenfoot (Java) or Visual Basic. Lego Mindstorm robotics is another popular activity as is creating web driven databases using PHP and MySQL. Aiglon is a member of Computers at School, a Cambridge based group of academics and teachers who explore innovative ways of teaching leading edge digital technologies.
