English Literature

The study of English Literature is at the core of what we do here at Aiglon College. From the BPF upwards, the department's aim is to instill (instil) a love of literature in all its shapes and forms. In the Junior School there is a strong focus on reading for pleasure, and from the third form and above students are equipped with the tools for analysis. Novels like Animal Farm and Of Mice and Men are an excellent way to encourage in-depth study of a work, and give a thorough foundation for the rigours of literary study at IGCSE and IB. Fifth form students who are placed in the higher sets (usually sets three and above) go on to take the Cambridge IGCSE in English Literature, which is excellent preparation for all essay based subjects at IB.

At IB level, the A1 Literature course is a rigorous, wide-ranging programme of study, encompassing prose, poetry and drama texts from all over the world and from many historical periods. This approach to IB teaching and learning fosters independence of thought and application, and as a result forms an important stepping stone towards degree level study in all disciplines. The international dimension of Aiglon College makes the International Baccalaureate the obvious choice for post-16 study.
