Geography

Geography is the meeting point of many disciplines, since all of the earth’s systems, whether natural or human, interact across its surface. Geography provides a unique link between the natural sciences and humanities, creating the overview necessary for the full understanding and effective management of our planet, its people and its resources.

Geography at Aiglon is based on
  • the study of themes and issues related to the natural, human and economic systems of the world, the processes that shape them, their interrelationships and evolution over time
  • the responsible and sustainable management of these systems
  • the development of a sound awareness of our environment and a sense of place at all scales, from the local to the global
  • the development of key skills, such as the ability to collect, analyse and present information, planning and teamwork. These skills are enhanced by our programme of practical fieldwork
  • the fostering of balanced judgement and responsible decision- making.
What do we study ?

1st to 3rd Form
Here we encourage different forms of enquiry, research and problem-solving, building individual and team skills. Junior School students follow courses based on the practical investigation of both physical and human environments. In the 3rd Form we focus on key issues of economic development and environmental sustainability for the future.

4th to 5th Form
Students prepare for the Cambridge IGCSE examination. The syllabus aims to develop the key skills while focusing on
  • Population, settlement and urban studies
  • The natural environment - a variety of landscape, climatic and ecological systems
  • Economic development and the use of resources - energy and water resource management, industrial and farming systems, leisure and tourism
  • Key issues of environmental risk and benefit, resource conservation and sustainable development for the future.
6th Form
Beyond GCSE, Geography goes well with all subjects. Students can choose Geography as a group four subject as part of the International Baccalaureate, with the option of studying at either standard or higher level.

The themes and issues studied on the IB course are important in training students for global citizenship and the future sustainable management and development of the human and natural resources of the world.

During the course students have unique opportunities to do practical field-work in a variety of environments, including a field-study course to the UK, where they gain hands-on experience of pressing issues of coastal and ecosystem management, river basin management, and urban development and regeneration.

Throughout the Geography course independent research and decision-making skills are developed which will serve students throughout their lives.
