Mathematics

At Aiglon we aim to equip our students to cope with maths in everyday life, to give them an awareness of, and confidence in, the mathematics curriculum.

At all age and academic levels we try to challenge, motivate and encourage students to enable them to get the most from their maths lessons, whilst at the same time making the subject enjoyable, relevant and fun to learn. We aim to give students a foundation of core skills, including problem solving, logical thinking, number, algebra and the use of computers. We encourage students to work and think independently as well as work in groups and discus maths logically. We prepare students for further study in mathematics and related fields by offering a variety of courses and maximising their qualifications in mathematics.

1st to 3rd Form. Years 7 to 9.

We follow the British curriculum at KS3 but supplement it with extension work and mathematical challenges. Students are grouped according to ability but all the groups cover the same basics.

4th and 5th Form. Years 10 and 11.

At KS4 we work towards GCSE examinations. The curriculum aims to make mathematics relevant to everyday situations wherever possible and encourages students to work logically and communicate their thoughts in a clear concise way. Students are entered for either Higher or Foundation tier depending on their individual skills and ability. At Higher tier a student can attain grades A* - D. At Foundation tier students can attain grades C –G.

L6th Year 12

In L6th all students take part in the IBDP program. Mathematics is a compulsory part of the IB Diploma program. This is because it is a course worth studying in its own right. It is challenging, rigorous and interesting. It builds on work met at GCSE, but also involves new ideas that some of the greatest minds have produced. In IB there are three levels of Mathematics: Higher level, standard level and studies level.

Higher Level is a very demanding course and is taught in 5 55 minute periods per week. Making a total of 240 taught hours over the two tears.

Standard level is a demanding course that is taught in 3 55 minute periods over the two years making a total of 150 hours taught.

Studies level counts as a standard level course and is designed for those who find mathematics challenging; it is taught in 3 55 minute periods over the two years making a total of 150 hours taught.

U6th Year 13

The academic year 2010 to 2011 will be the last year of A-levels taught at Aiglon. The courses outlined below started in Year 12.

A-Level Courses:

Further mathematics A- level at AS or A2 level. The AS level can be completed after either 1 or 2 years.
Mathematics A-level at AS or A2 level. The AS level can be completed after either 1 or 2 years.

Subsidiary maths courses:

A short course to enable students to gain a C grade or above at GCSE level. A mathematics course that helps students improve their mathematical skills. Particularly their algebra, number skills and interpretive skills that will assist them in SAT examinations.
