Space Science
AIGLON COLLEGE SPACE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
& KALOUTI OBSERVATORY
MISSION STATEMENT
Introduction
Space Science plays a major role in our lives today, whether directly or indirectly. Our communications networks, food and water supply and environmental management depend on space technology. It is at the cutting edge of human exploration and endeavour, and is playing an increasing role in industrial, economic and technological development around the globe. It is also one of the few areas of human activity where genuine international cooperation flourishes, and can serve to promote peace. Astronomy and the exploration of space are also helping us to discover and understand our origins and our place in the Universe. Ultimately, the creation of a sustainable and viable future for the Earth and its people will depend on the development of Space Science.
The Space Age is, as yet, in its infancy. It is only 400 years since Galileo first turned a telescope on the heavens, less than 100 years since radio technology enabled us to see more than just a little of the night sky, 50 years since the first manned space flights. But the next 20 years will see rapid and massive changes in space technology and its application, particularly with advances in ICT, materials science and energy production. Tomorrow’s global citizens and societies will need to be aware of developments in Space Science if they are to participate actively and share in world progress.
With its facilities, staff interest and expertise, Aiglon College is in a unique position to offer a strong education in the fields of Astronomy and Space Science. As an international school we aim to take a lead in such a forward-looking area of education. Please click here to look more closely at our departmental goals.
