Beyond the Armband: Steph Houghton’s, A Football Legend’s Blueprint for Resilience, Leadership, and Purpose

When former England captain and Manchester City legend Steph Houghton visited students at Aiglon College, she brought more than an elite sporting résumé. Students experienced a masterclass in grit, accountability and the power of human connection.

Her first day on campus, Steph met with the community in a packed auditorium. Students from Year 9-13 alongside staff and parents came together in the Moghadam Campus Hub as renowned broadcaster, Polly Starkie, interviewed Steph on stage. The conversation offered an intimate look into Steph’s pioneering career - exploring the shared values of resilience, respect, responsibility, and service that define true leadership.

"Steph Houghton is a defining figure in modern English football, a leader whose grit, vision, and defensive mastery helped spark a revolution in the women's game," stated Kaiyee (Class of 2027), an avid sportswoman, during the welcoming remarks.

Who is Steph Houghton?

Following the unveiling of the City Legend’s Mosaic at Manchester City’s First Team facility in August, Steph headed out to Switzerland to share her life experience with Aiglonians.

Across a decade as City’s inaugural WSL captain, she led the team to its first WSL title alongside multiple FA and League Cups. Internationally, she earned 121 England caps and captained the Lionesses through a historic 2015 World Cup bronze and consecutive major semi-finals. Since retiring in May 2024, Steph serves as City’s first female club ambassador, a Sky Sports and BBC pundit and a champion for the Darby Rimmer Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Foundation.

Challenge: Turning Bumps into Breakthroughs

From fighting gender stereotypes in 13-year-old hand-me-down men’s kits to coping with career-altering injuries, Houghton’s journey was far from smooth. Missing out on the 2007 World Cup after breaking her leg just two days before departure was a defining test.

"As an 18-year-old... to try and put that in perspective was really, really hard... I think injuries taught me a lot about myself. There’s two ways you can go: you can either feel sorry for yourself... or use the time to be even better as a player and as a person" stated Steph.

When asked by a student about the most challenging point in her career, Steph reflected on her heartbreak of missing the Euro 2022 squad following intensive Achilles surgery: "It just shows that sometimes nothing goes to plan... you’ve just got to control what you can do... I turned it into a positive,” she said.

Respect & Diversity: Finding Strength in Our Differences

Having played alongside international icons like Jamaica’s Bunny Shaw and Japan’s Yui Hasegawa, Houghton emphasised that leading an international locker room requires empathy and adaptability.

Responsibility & Leadership: Leading by Example

Taking over the national armband at just 26 years old brought immense pressure. Steph admitted that attempting to please everyone required her to evolve her leadership style after the first six months as she needed to find an anchor in her own core values.

"The first person you need to please is yourself, because if you can't do that, you can't help anybody else... To upcoming leaders: understand people on a human level... and don't be scared to adapt,” she continued.

Service: Leaving the Game Better Than You Found It

True leadership extends far beyond the pitch. Whether advocating for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation - founded alongside her husband - or breaking barriers for future generations of women in sport, Steph views service as a responsibility.

Sharing Expertise with Junior and Senior School Students

Throughout her visit, Steph joined Head Coach Joe Maguire and PE Teacher Chloe Elphick on the new football stadium pitch to support student training sessions. The dynamic programme combined pitch and fitness suite activities with Manchester City’s playing philosophy and methodology. Both Junior and Senior School students participated in on-field sessions as well as interactive off-field workshops - covering nutrition and performance analysis - to promote holistic player development.

Inauguration of the Alpina Football Stadium

In the presence of Year 2 - 6 students, members of staff, football coach, Joe Maguier, and the delegation from Manchester City Football Club, the School Director, Nicola Sparrow, stated:

“Today is about football. Today is about sport. Today is about the students of Aiglon College and Man City Football Club. I want to thank you very much for being here, Steph. We appreciate the time you spent both with our juniors and our seniors, the talk that you gave last night, the time you've given up, and also the chocolate that's been around because you've been here" said Nicola Sparrow.

"First of all, thank you so much for having me over the last couple of days,” said Steph. ‘This place is absolutely amazing, and just to see and witness the partnership that Aiglon and Manchester City have at this moment in time, it's pretty special. And for all you young boys and girls, I think, to do your education, but also have a chance to play football and learn so many things that happen within football - it's not just about the pitch, it's everything off the pitch as well. You're very lucky to be at this school, have these facilities, so use it as much as you can.”

The inauguration of the pitch was completed by Jelani (Year 6) exchanging a few passes with Steph.

What’s Next for Steph?

Following a round of Q&A during her first evening, Kaiyee closed the event asking Steph, “What's next?" She stated, "My ultimate goal is to manage Manchester City one day... to pass on what I've learned over the years."

Manchester City Football School

In 2023, Aiglon College proudly partnered with Manchester City Football Club (MCFC) to establish the first Manchester City Football School in Europe. This collaboration has since flourished, offering our students unparalleled opportunities to develop both as individuals and as footballers.

The programme offers every Aiglonian the opportunity to get a world-class football education on campus, tailored to their specific needs and interests. The curriculum caters to all different levels. Beyond technical skills, the programme emphasises personal growth, leadership, teamwork, and resilience. Students engage in workshops covering nutrition, mental health, and the mindset required for sporting success.
