Exploration Years (10-11)

The Subjects

Students working toward achieving IGCSE qualifications will study English (First Language English & World Literature; OR English as a Second Language), Mathematics, French, Science and Physical Education. Students then pick three elective subjects each. They will also study Aiglon's Spirit, Health and Wellbeing curriculum. You can view the subjects on offer at the bottom of this page.

Elective Subjects

Students' personal education path is supported by elective subjects which follow their interests and goals. A fascinating variety is on offer, and students are advised to select on arts subject, one social science and a modern foreign language. However, they can pick from a range of options. 

Assessment

Assesment for IGCSE qualifications combines internally-marked coursework, practical work, and end-of-course examinations.

From Cambridge International: Cambridge IGCSE assessment takes place at the end of the course and can include written, oral, coursework and practical assessment. This broadens opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning, particularly when their first language is not English. In many subjects there is a choice between core and extended curricula, making Cambridge IGCSE suitable for a wide range of abilities.

Grades are benchmarked using eight internationally recognised grades, A* to G, which have clear guidelines to explain the standard of achievement for each grade.

Independent Study

To encourage and develop student’s independent learning skills, each subject provides prep on a weekly basis. A prep timetable is issued at the start of each term. The aim of this timetable is to reduce the pressure on students by ensuring that they have a consistent amount of prep throughout the week. 

To further encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning, conduct inquiry and develop independent learning skills, teachers across the IGCSE should be aware when IAs and other forms of assessment are taking place across subjects; During these weeks prep should be reduced to 35 minutes per subject.

The Subjects

In order for students to receive the Aiglon Pre-IB Certificate, they must take a minimum of 7 subjects assessed in line with the IB criteria, with each subject marked out of 7. The students also need to complete the Pre-IB Programme Core (1 mark) which consists of a Spirit Project, completing CAS and Expedition reflections, and a short presentation. 

How to choose?

All students studying for the Pre-IB Certificate need to study English, Mathematics, Science and French. In addition, for 2022 to 2023, students need to select 3 more subjects - one from each of the following blocks.

Assessment

Consistent with the IB Diploma, assessment within the IB Foundation is flexible depending on each subject’s particular requirements. Throughout the academic year, students complete IAs and a range of other subject specific assessments. In the Summer Term, students will be provided with end of course examinations across all of their subjects. 

To ensure that all students studying towards the IB Foundation are aware of academic expectations and deadlines, an assessment calendar is communicated to students in September of each year. Assessment tasks are spread out throughout the academic year.
