In Aiglon's largest event ever, over 700 alumni, family and friends returned to the mountain for a stunning display of Aiglon's global community.
For three days, Aiglon hosted a series of events on campus and in the local mountains of Villars to celebrate 70 years of this small, alpine school experiment as founded by John Corlette in 1949. As Chairman Tony Jashanmal said in his published welcome, "This 'retour à la source' is a testament to the enduring influence of an education at Aiglon College."
The community itself was at the core of the weekend, offering multiple events where old and new friends could gather and enjoy their time together. Guests came from as nearby as up the street and from as far away as Australia. The weekend opened with open campus tours and an evening barbecue extending late into the evening featuring welcome speeches, an alphorn and yodellers.
Saturday began with two staples of the Aiglon experience: meditation and expedition. The inspiring meditation was delivered by alumnus, Michael McCabe, and will be available shortly for streaming through Aiglon's new Meditation Podcast. This was followed by an expedition and picnic lunch on the mountain with an opportunity for guests to sample again an expedition into the hills around the much-loved Bretaye.
The evening's gala, despite some hot summer temperatures, was enjoyed by everyone. This was an exciting opportunity to meet friends and enjoy an excellent evening together while also supporting the school. The auction organised by the FOAC US (Friends of Aiglon College USA), was a great success in raising over CHF 50,000 for Aiglon scholarship initiatives. The auction was led by Aiglon's own, Simon Kidston, alumnus and renowned classic car dealer.
Sunday's commemorative chapel service was led by former Aiglon chaplain, John Murdoch, and was an excellent opportunity to hear reflections from alumni about the significance and impact of Aiglon's enduring ethos on their lives far beyond the walls of the school. The weekend's events concluded with a train ride to the Crazy Moose Restaurant where everyone relaxed in the sunshine over a long and lingering brunch buffet.
For many alumni the events didn't end there. Many class groups used the opportunity to catch up with one another before and after the events on a variety of special itineraries for what was certainly a meaningful time together back in the beauty of the Swiss Alps.
Thank you to everyone who made this time such a special success. A special thank you to both the staff and alumni organising committees, the FOAC US team who organised the auction, everyone who donated, and of course everyone who both attended and worked so hard to promote the event and encourage their friends to attend. We have no doubt that the 70th Anniversary will go down in the Aiglon history books as a particularly meaningful and celebratory occasion.
