Report on the recent basketball tournament in Denmark by Ondine Peck-Voll (Girls Team Captain) and Shawn Liu (Boys Team Captain).
Before half-term, Aiglon’s Girls and Boys basketball teams travelled to Herlufsholm school, Denmark, to participate in a Round Square tournament. The boys were competing for their 3rd consecutive year and the girls their 2nd.
The pressure was high for the girls to defend their championship title from 2019 and they began the weekend strongly, beating home-team Herlufsholm 35-11 on Saturday. After winning two other group matches that day, and a further two matches Sunday, we entered the evening final undefeated. There we faced local rivals Beau Soleil. The game was extremely competitive and exciting, with high energy and loud cheering from a big crowd. We were able to keep our composure and win 13-9, taking home the championship cup for the second year running! Special mention goes to Klara Kruger, who was named tournament MVP.
For the boys the tournament was incredibly competitive, competing against teams from Germany, Switzerland, the UK and Denmark. We finished third in our group on Saturday, losing two games and winning one. We picked up our game on Sunday in the playoffs, winning our quarter final v Herlufsholm who had qualified second in their group. In the semi final we had an extremely competitive match against our neighbours Beau Soleil, leading for over 2 quarters but eventually losing by 5. We had to pick ourselves up after this tough defeat though for the 3rd place playoff versus Windermere from England, which we won by 12 points.
Overall, we had another fantastic trip, both teams shared a lot of success and look forward to returning next year!
Thank you so much to our incredible coaches Mr George and Mr Steward; we could not have done it without you and we are incredibly grateful for all your hard work and dedication to our teams.
