Football Tournament
Posted on 30th May 2022
It was an early start for the boys and girls from the Cat. D category as they made their way to Le Rosey for the SGIS Football Tournament Cat. D. The boys were one of 12 teams and the girls one of 9.
Here are the boys' results (Coached by Mr Martin):
Game 1: Aiglon v La Garenne :3 - 0
A great start to the day as the boys comfortably beat La Garenne with goals from Taiga, Pablo and Jacob. The boys played really well with some slick passing and neat moves to set up the goals.
Game 2: Aiglon v JFK: 1-0
Taiga continued to lead the attack in great form by scoring a great individual goal to make it two wins from two.
Game 3: Aiglon v Le Rosey: 0-2
The first real test of the day came as the boys took on the hosts. They had lots of shots on target but just couldn't beat their opponents' goalkeeper who made some great saves.
Game 4: Aiglon v La Grande Boissière: 0-3
Arguably one of the best teams on paper, LGB put on a dominant display as they showed the boys how simple passing and movement can be used to detrimental effect. Andrei kept Aiglon in the game for large parts by making some excellent saves but couldn't do anything about their well taken goals.
Game 5: Aiglon v La Châtaigneraie: 1-0
After a well earned lunch break, where the boys could rest, recuperate and regroup. The boys produced a superb display of maturity, composure and fighting spirit. A great piece of individual skill from Jacob brought the only goal of the game.
The boys finished third in group A and missed out on the semi-finals by 4 points. Their last game was the 5th-6th place playoff for final placement. The boys were up against Le Regent and after going 1-0 down after 3 minutes, the boys stepped up their game and Pablo's deflected shot creeped over the line for the equaliser. The game went to penalties. Le Regent went first and Andrei made a comfortable save, Jacob scored Aiglon's first, slotting it cooly into the bottom right. Andrei saved Le Regent's second. Selim's effort was saved by their goalkeeper. Le Regent's third taker stepped up and scored. The pressure was on Taiga, score to seal the win and finish 5, miss and we enter sudden death. Ice cool Taiga, smashed his penalty into the top left corner. The boys won 2-1 on penalties.
Well done to Jacob, Simon, Taiga, Pablo, Ned, Selim, Ky, Victor, Allen, Andrei, Nathan, Oliver and Erik. They have done fantastically well this year!
Here are the girls' results (Coached by Mr Wise):
Game 1: Aiglon v La Garenne: 0-0
Aiglon had 12 shots in the game and a penalty saved, but could not get the ball into the La Garenne net. Having not made a single shot in the game, it was a frustrating start for the players. Kaiyee and Vera were players of the match bringing their energy and enthusiasm.
Game 2: Aiglon v JFK: 0-1
A disappointing result given that again Aiglon created more of the chances but couldn't score. Though in an honest aftermatch team talk the seeds of success where germinating and a new team formation was discussed.
Game 5: Aiglon v La Chat: 0-5
La Chat eventually won the whole tournament and having won their first two group games 7-0 and 5-0 we were a little intimidated. We switched from a 3-2-1 formation to a 5-1 formation and placed Kaiyee in goal. Though we lost we did keep the score to 0-0 for the first 5 minutes.
Game 4: Aiglon v LGB: 1-1
Arguably the best 1-1 draw you could see. The game passed from early pressure from LGB, to sustained pressure from Aiglon. All the team did really well and started passing the ball and running around alot. Great play from Lise with the goals, Alyssa in defence, Isabella in midfield and super sub Beth.
Game 5: Aiglon v ISL 0-1
Having reverted to the now dependable 3-2-1 formation. Aiglon bossed this game from start to finish. Vera was solid in goal, the defence of Jinwen, Moni, Alyssa was like a wall, the midfield was controlled by Isabella, Lise and Kaiyee and up front Liz worked hard to frighten the opposition defence. The difference in the game was provided by super sub Beth Hamilton who provided the energy to score her first goal for Aiglon.
The girls finished 4th out of 5 in their group and won the 7th / 8th playoff to finish 7th overall. During the day they grew in confidence and started to look like a team who knew their roles and worked together. This was their first tournament this year and they did themselves proud.
Well done to Lise, Jinwen, Hitomi, Kaiyee, Moni, Vera, Alyssa, Isabella, Liz, Beth (super sub)
